Abstract

Social studies methods courses offer a unique opportunity for preservice teachers to learn and serve in a global context. As the world is rapidly becoming a smaller place, a global project offers many opportunities to help students think beyond their local community by becoming globally engaged, and develop a deeper understanding of global issues and the interconnectedness of humankind. This article presents the findings of a study that sought to identify the successes and challenges of a global service learning experience of preservice social studies teachers at two mid-western colleges, Ohio University and Davis & Elkins College, both located in Appalachia.
